Government and Politics in the Light of the Recent Financial & Refugee Crisis in Greece

OVERVIEW

This program focuses on aspects of social justice, the refugee crisis, political system, and legal issues that have arisen due to the financial crisis. The main aim and objective is students to become aware of the challenges that arose when a number of external factors put pressure not only on the Greek legal system, but also on our society, and how these problems were exacerbated by the issue of having two separate legal systems, the Greek and the European one. We will examine the impact that these issues have left both on our society, but also on our legal systems, as well as issues that arose when the two legal systems clashed with each other. Furthermore, we will discuss the way in which these problems were confronted on a local and on a European level.

Available throughout the year, upon request

DESCRIPTION

Students will be introduced to the main characteristics of the Greek political and legal environment as well as the European framework, through a series of lectures and workshops that will take place at the heart of the country’s government and juridical system. They will also be given the opportunity to discuss with key figures who will be invited to meet the students during the sessions (i.e. a Supreme Court judge during the visit to the Supreme Court, and an MP who serves on the social justice committee of the Parliament).

The course’s aims and objectives will be assessed via a group presentation students will be asked to prepare, and a report that will be submitted at the end.
